(Notícia em Inglês) Idoia Field Aranguren investigated in his dissertation the use of heterogeneous catalysts for synthesizing biodiesel, a biofuel similar to those of petroleum diesel fuel characteristics, but with the advantage of being renewable. Facing homogeneous type catalysts, has worked in the development of heterogeneous catalysts "that can recover and reuse the catalyst and greatly reduce the environmental impact." The synthesis of biodiesel is based on a reaction known as transesterification. It's disla combining vegetable oil with a light, usually methanol alcohol. The triglycerides of the oil through a catalyst, reacts with the methanol and converted into biodiesel (more specifically, fatty acid methyl esters that are to constitute the biodiesel). "In this thesis we have established the basis for developing a heterogeneous catalyst capable to be implemented in industrial processes for production of biodiesel," says the researcher. In addition, it has identified the most influential parameters that determine the behavior of the catalyst.
