A homogeneous catalyst is in solution with the reagents, or in the same phase as they. The catalyst is combined with one of the reactants to form an intermediate compound which reacts with the other more easily. However, the catalyst does not influence the equilibrium of the reaction, because the decomposition products in the reactants is accelerated to a similar degree.
A homogeneous catalyst such as nitric oxide is used in catalyzing sulfur trioxide formation by reacting sulfur dioxide with oxygen, at the beginning and the end of the reaction the same amount of nitric oxide.
