Organic diesel particle filter catalyst for the production of biodiesel
Biodiesel derived from animals, used or waste vegetable oils or presented as an alternative to fossil fuels due to its renewable nature and its lower environmental impact. The current biodiesel manufacturing process is made by transesterification of animal with light alcohols (methanol) using a catalyst for the conversion (Figure 1) or vegetable oils:
The catalysts used in the process are required for the transesterification reaction diesel particle filter occurs and it is possible to achieve high speed in the production of biodiesel. Conventional catalysts used industrially, are usually strong acids or bases (sulfuric acid, KOH, NaOH), allowing high conversion of biodiesel under moderate operating conditions diesel particle filter (50-70C). In this sense we have conducted research to develop products based on solid acidic or basic (exchanged zeolites, Nafion, CaO, MgO, ...) catalysts but still distant results to those achieved with conventional acidic or basic homogeneous catalysts.
In the development of new heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production has recently reported the catalytic activity exhibiting interesting carbonaceous solids from the incomplete carbonization of natural organic materials (saccharides, cellulose, ...). In this line of action, researchers at the University of Whan (China) have developed diesel particle filter new catalysts for the production of biodiesel based on carbonaceous solids formed from shells of crustaceans. In developing diesel particle filter these catalysts researchers have partially carbonized transforming crustacean shells chitin, the main component of the shell in an open porous structure formed by functionalized polymers. Treatment of this material with an inorganic solid form KF basic character with interesting catalytic properties for the transesterification of oils in the production of biodiesel. In laboratory tests, these new catalysts have achieved promising results in the production of biodiesel (90% conversion diesel particle filter in 3 hours in the transesterification of rapeseed oil at 65 C + methanol). Although catalysts have some stability problems that must be solved in future developments, the benefits of this change in technology could be important catalysts for biodiesel production in a more efficient and environmentally friendly than that achieved in Today the industrial systems using homogeneous catalysts.
