When my renault clio 1200 gets up to temp it almost stalls. It is like the auto choke is stuck on. I have not taken it to a garage as it seems to be ok if I carry on driving dogfish head falls church for a few mins. Any advise you can give to get rid of the problem?

When my renault clio 1200 gets up to temp it almost stalls. It is like the auto choke is stuck on. I have not taken it to a garage as it seems to be ok if I carry on driving for a few mins. Any advise you can give to get rid of the problem? Right first we would need more details of your car as modern cars have no choke they were fazed out with ecu 's and fuel injection.

Is it 8 or 16 valve? Does the spluttering only happen at low revs? Or does it appear to misfire when accelerating through 2000+ RPM? When was it last serviced? How does the coolant level look? Has it gone down? What colour is it? Check the oil level is in the correct range. Do the heaters in the cabin work well? Is it sometimes difficult to start? When you rev the engine (above 3000 RPM) with the headlamps on full beam, is there a noticeable increase in brightness? (Check it with the lights dogfish head falls church shining on a wall.) Any advise you can give to get rid of the problem? If the propblem only arises when the engine is warm it may be due to a faulty engine cooloant temp sensor - it controls the fuel mix via the ECU .
